An indigenous Queensland
Currently, most (87%) Indigenous school students are enrolled in state schools.
Over 39,000 (8%) of Queensland state school students are Indigenous. Over half (56%) of these students attend state schools in urban areas, about one quarter (24%) attend schools in rural areas and a fifth (20%) in remote areas.
Most (88%) of the 1275 state schools in Queensland have 1 or more Indigenous students and 22 state schools have over 200 Indigenous students (DET 2010, online)
Officially Indigenous Education in Queensland state schools is aimed at ‘A better understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal cultures and Torres Strait Islander cultures develops an enriched appreciation of Australia's cultural heritage, and can lead to reconciliation. This is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of an Australian identity.’

Eq Rationale for Embedding Indigenous Perspectives (EATSIPS)
‘It is vital to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives within school
practices. It is essential to help develop a greater understanding of
the histories, cultures, values, beliefs, languages, lifestyles and roles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Such perspectives need to include all aspects of Australia’s history, from before colonisation to the present day. A better understanding of, and respect for, Indigenous cultures develops an enriched appreciation of Australia’s cultural heritage, and can lead to reconciliation. This is essential to the maturity of Australia as a nation and fundamental to the development of an Australian identity. The need for embedding Indigenous perspectives is based on the premise that increased understanding is needed to build corporate knowledge within Education Queensland that is responsive to the needs of an important client group.’
